Intentionality Ep. 2: Cedric Mitchell

Discovering Passion in the Unlikely

Passion can find us in the most unexpected places. For Cedric Major Mitchell, a talented glass artist based in Los Angeles, it happened in a recording studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

In the middle of his music career, Cedric's life took a surprising turn when he discovered the world of studio glass. Amid the hum of recording equipment and the rhythm of his music, his curiosity led him to the mesmerizing art of glassblowing. This seemingly small distraction sparked a passion that redefined his artistic path.

The allure of molten glass, with its fluidity and the intricate dance of heat and craftsmanship, struck a deep chord with Cedric. This connection led him to enroll in a glassblowing course. What started as a casual interest quickly became a defining passion.

Cedric's journey from a recording studio to a glass studio shows the power of curiosity and life's unexpected twists. His story reminds us that profound passions are often discovered not through deliberate searching but by staying open to new experiences.

Today, Cedric Major Mitchell is a testament to the beauty of embracing unexpected opportunities. His work in glass art reflects his unique perspective and inspires those still searching for their passion. Cedric's journey encourages us to stay curious and open to the unexpected, as it is often in these moments that we find our true calling.

Q&A with Cedric:

Q: Why do you blow glass?

A: It’s very challenging—it's a mental game and very fast-paced. Imagine the game of chess but on a skateboard. You really have to think. It involves a lot of problem-solving, and you need to have a lot of intention because your actions and movements must be fluid and work together.

Q: What inspires your work?

A: It took a while for me to develop my style, but much of it is influenced by my childhood, like playground equipment and bright colors.

Q: How does music influence your work?

A: Music influences everything we do. Our work is heavily involved with music. You need rhythm in the studio, to be on beat, and to create a rhythm with the person you're working with.

Q: What motivates you?

A: My motivation is to show others that they can overcome adversity and succeed. They can do it, too. I wasn’t highly creative—I didn’t know how to draw, and I didn’t come from an artistic background, but with years of practice, you can become good at something.

Q: What does living with intention mean to you?

A: It means having a purpose. As a business owner and maker, you need to move with intention. You have to stay on top of things and not let anything go unnoticed.
